Sabbath Coffee Michigan Revealed
When Trevor and Miranda Graham first started planning for their new roastery cafe, they knew it needed to be something special. The couple envisioned a place where they could offer the Metro Detroit community coffee that was not only delicious but also part of a necessary intermission in their nonstop lives.
That’s why the roaster is named Sabbath Coffee Michigan: The word means rest, a time of celebration, and the Grahams hope to encourage their customers to stop and enjoy a fresh cup of coffee while stepping away from the daily grind. The couple also hoped to make their roasting and retail space as visually appealing as possible, so they went all out on the decor.
Sabbath Coffee Michigan: Where Quality Meets Passion
The pair hired Detroit-based design firm Tech & Mortar Hospitality Group to revamp the Royal Oak-area location, located at 24 E. 14 Mile, which is adjacent to White Wolf Patisserie and next door to Weiss Distilling Company. The two-story space is dedicated to production and retail, with a to-go counter offering grab-and-go items, including frozen lattes and cider; an espresso and tonic, served with a squirt of kombucha on top; and the Draper (espresso with brown sugar syrup, orange bitters, and a cherry garnish).
Behind the counter are Sabbath’s roasting operations, a 12-kilo Datgen roaster made in Turkey and modified by Usonian Systems. Whole beans are sold in the shop by the bag and wholesale to local restaurants and cafes. Indoor seating has yet to be rolled out due to COVID-19 restrictions, but a standing-height counter lines one window and a high-seated table is planned for the green wall behind it. Heated outdoor seating in the alleyway is also in the works.
