Apostille for Federal Use
An apostille authenticates the signatures, seals and stamps on official documents. It is a way of verifying that your document is genuine and can be recognized in another country. The country where your document will be used determines whether you need an apostille or a full legalization (see our article on Legalization for more information). Our office only issues apostilles for documents intended to be used in countries that are members of the Hague Convention of 1961. If your document will be presented in a country that is not a member of the Convention, we recommend that you contact the Embassy in the country where you intend to present the document to see what steps are required to authenticate your document.

Some examples of documents that need apostilles or authentication certificates include birth certificates, marriage licenses and divorce papers. School transcripts and diplomas and criminal background checks are also commonly apostilled or authenticated. Apostilles or authentication certificates must be affixed to the original document. They cannot be separated and attached later.
If your document requires apostilling, you may drop it off at the Corporation Division (located in the same building as our Apostille department). We are happy to help you with the process. We accept credit cards, eliminating the need for companies to write personal checks or for couriers to carry cash. Please enclose a pre-paid return envelope. If you are mailing your document, please include a cover letter specifying the country of destination.
